Gordon Black, M.S.M., is the author of THE NEGOTIATOR trilogy, a series of geopolitical thrillers centred on terrorist and insurgent kidnappings, international hostage crises, and the complex negotiations that unfold behind them. His fiction draws upon a professional career spanning law enforcement, counter-terrorism, hostage negotiation, and international crisis management.

Before turning to fiction, Gordon served for three decades with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, retiring as a Chief Superintendent. During his career, he specialized in major crime investigations, including homicide, before being selected as Canada’s first and lead counter-terrorism hostage negotiator. In that role, he developed national negotiation strategies and, alongside highly experienced team members, became involved in some of Canada’s most sensitive responses to terrorist and extra-territorial kidnapping and hostage-taking. His operational experience had him operating in the Middle East, South America and across Africa where he negotiated in some of the world’s most complex and dangerous environments.

Gordon’s expertise was also sought internationally. Foreign governments called upon him for advice concerning the kidnapping and hostage-taking of their citizens outside their own borders, while foreign law-enforcement agencies sought him out for specialized hostage-negotiation training. His international work included briefings and instruction for senior government officials and law-enforcement leaders, sharing strategies for managing crises in which political pressure, intelligence, cultural considerations, and the lives of hostages intersect.

During both his RCMP service and his subsequent professional career, Gordon provided counter-kidnap and hostage-survival training to personnel serving in Canadian embassies and diplomatic missions in regions of significant instability, as well as Canadians preparing for deployment to those environments. Following his retirement, this work was undertaken in partnership with a highly experienced and gifted former Canadian special operations operator, whose operational expertise complemented Gordon’s background in negotiation and crisis management. Together, they prepared personnel to recognize, avoid, and respond to the risks associated with kidnapping and hostage-taking before a crisis occurred.

That experience now informs his fiction. THE NEGOTIATOR trilogy draws readers into the hidden world of international hostage negotiation while exploring the human decisions, moral conflicts, political pressures, and strategic calculations that unfold when the lives of hostages become entangled with international consequences.

Gordon lives in British Columbia, Canada, where he continues to write fiction exploring conflict, negotiation, loyalty, and the complexities of human behaviour.
